More on the Bevan Dashwood Dash

This race is an old favourite - the upper reaches of the Canning make for a twisty-turny course with tree lined banks and much birdlife. There's a portage at Kent Street Weir. It's easy to get lost if you haven't done this course before so photocopy the street directory of the relevant pages and do a practice run. The floating (rather pretty) "weed" you see may slow you down, but it's harmless. The following paragraph comes from a February, 1999, edition of Canoe WA, the canoeing association's former magazine:
"According to a scientist at the Water and Rivers Commission it (the "weed") is a harmless floating fern called azola which helps to keep the blue-green algae at bay (competes for the nutrients). Currents and the wind cause it to collect in certain places. You can paddle through it; it's not toxic and will wash off your boat."
Who is Bevan Dashwood? He's one of that group of pioneering canoeists who started it all in Western Australia in the mid sixties. And he's still paddling! He started up Darling Range Canoe Club whose home waters are this section of the Canning River.  He has made an important contribution to canoeing, in particular, slalom, and is a life-time member of the state canoeing association.

WAIS Athletes the new Oceania Canoe Slalom Champions

Kylie Broad, Tuesday, 2 March 2010

WAIS athletes Robin Jeffery and Kynan Maley take the Oceania crown in the men's C2 event

Last weekend, at the 2010 Oceania Open held at Penrith Whitewater Stadium, WAIS athletes Robin Jeffery and Kynan Maley took the Oceania crown in the men's C2 event.

Maley and Jeffery have only recently teamed up to contest the C2 class and have already enjoyed great success in spite of having to borrow an older C2 boat. "We're hoping to improve on our times as we've just taken delivery of a top racing lay-up C2", said Jeffery.

Jeffery, from Gooseberry Hill and Maley, from North Fremantle, were forced to relocate to Penrith in New South Wales as there is no longer a white water venue in Western Australia. "There's a big push for an artificial course in Perth and all the West Australian paddlers in Penrith would be keen to move back home if that happened", said Maley.

The Oceania Open saw nineteen countries and over 200 athletes competing. These races were also the first leg of the selection races for the 2010 Australian Canoe Slalom Team that will compete later this year in the World Cup races in Spain, Germany and Czech Republic and the World Championships in Slovenia.

Maley and Jeffery will be competing again at the remaining selection races to be held on 6 & 7 March at the difficult Brady's Lake course in Tasmania. Both athletes are also competing in the C1 class and if successful will represent Australia in two classes, in accordance with the new International Canoe Federation rules.

Just a reminder about the 2009/10 Sprint wind-up presentation night this coming Friday at the Willeton Sports Club, in the Blue Room, Burrendah Boulevarde, Willetton

Start is at 7pm.  The Willeton sports club is a fully licensed venue, food and drinks can be purchased at the bar just outside our room.

The night will consist of presentations of the State Sprint medals, regatta season prizes and State Sprint Nationals Jackets.  We will hold all the guppy presentations first followed by a small break which will allow those guppy paddlers who need to head off to bed a chance to leave early if they need.  We hope to have all the presentations completed by 9.30 but we have the room until 11pm for those who wish to socialize after the presentations.
